According to local reports, the Venezuelan government has blocked access to Binance, X (formerly Twitter), and other online services amid protests over disputed presidential election results. Reports have it that the state-owned ISP CANTV is leading the blockade.

Binance is out of service in Venezuela

In an August 9 X post, local anti-censorship organization VE sin Filtro said that it “detected a DNS block on the cryptocurrency exchange Binance, which affects the normal operation of its website and mobile application.”

According to reports, Venezuela’s state-owned internet service provider (ISP) CANTV has also affected other major websites such as Reddit, Signal, and X (Twitter). CANTV is Venezuela’s largest provider of broadband internet access.

CANTV’s decision to block Binance is likely due to the Venezuelan government’s crackdown on crypto trading. In an email to Venezuelan clients, Binance explained that it is “actively engaging with local authorities on the matter.”

Binance entrusts the current progress to its high-end service provisions adding “We want to assure you that your funds are SAFU under our robust security protocols. We understand the inconvenience and concern this situation may cause. We are monitoring the situation closely to address it in the best and quickest way possible.”

However, it remains unclear when access to Binance will be restored. X has also confirmed that they have been blocked in Venezuela. Elon Musk and Venezuela’s President Maduro have been at it for weeks.

Maduro accused Musk of using X to incite protests following the election, portraying the billionaire and the chaos as part of a US-backed “fascist, imperialist” coup attempt in Venezuela. Maduro said in a speech on Thursday night that:

“Elon Musk is the owner of X and has violated all the rules of the social network itself […]  He has violated the rules by inciting hatred, fascism, civil war, death, and confrontation between Venezuelans, and has violated all Venezuelan laws. [..] Get out Elon Musk!”

Well, he just made it happen.
