A massive social media frenzy sparked after a news outlet posted a now-deleted video from HBO’s upcoming documentary, Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery. The video suggested that Peter Todd, a prominent figure in Bitcoin development, is believed to be the elusive Bitcoin creator, Satoshi Nakamoto.
Peter Todd To Be Named Satoshi Nakamoto?
The post by Aggr News, shared on X (formerly Twitter), claimed, “Leaked video from HBO documentary suggests that HBO believes Peter Todd is Satoshi,” igniting a wave of speculation across the crypto community. For context, Peter Todd is a well-known Bitcoin Core developer and founder of OpenTimestamps.
He is also recognized for his contributions to BTC network’s growth and his outspoken views on its future. Despite his deep involvement in the BTC ecosystem, the claim that Todd could be Satoshi Nakamoto, Bitcoin’s mysterious founder, has been met with skepticism.

BitMEX Research, a leading voice in crypto analysis, quickly weighed in on the situation. Quoting the Aggr News post, they remarked, “Apparently HBO will say Peter Todd is Satoshi. And HBO would be wrong.” Earlier, BitMEX Research posted a detailed analysis of HBO’s documentary. They predicted the film would name someone notable in the BTC space, but dismissed the notion that this person could truly be Satoshi.

“HBO will shortly claim someone as Satoshi. HBO’s prediction will be better than just finding someone in the phone book called Satoshi (Leah McGrath Goodman) & it won’t be an obvious fraudster (CSW),” they stated.
BitMEX Research further added, “HBO will pick someone who said smart stuff about electronic cash years ago… but with context, just puts them in a group with many other people. HBO will not have any new compelling evidence. HBO will be wrong.”
The documentary, directed by Cullen Hoback and produced by HBO Documentary Films, is set to premiere on October 8. Titled Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery, it promises to delve into the origins of Bitcoin and explore the identity of its creator.
According to HBO, the documentary will be a “globe-spanning investigation” and feature interviews with key players, uncovering new clues about BTC’s creation. As the release date draws near, the crypto community remains divided over the identity of Satoshi Nakamoto. Earlier, last week, Len Sassaman was thought to be named in the documentary.
